Business visitors were hosted at company premises, as the city had no hotel. It is said that in the 1930s, the director of <strong data-start=\"309\" data-end=\"329\">Kemi Corporation<\/strong> would travel daily by <strong data-start=\"352\" data-end=\"377\">troika horse carriage<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"405\">Haparanda City Hotel<\/strong> for business lunches.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"431\" data-end=\"462\"><strong data-start=\"435\" data-end=\"460\">The Birth of Merihovi<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"464\" data-end=\"874\">After the wars, things changed. <strong data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"524\">Construction of Merihovi<\/strong> began in <strong data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"542\">1946<\/strong>, though materials were scarce. <strong data-start=\"574\" data-end=\"607\">Steel bars, nails, and bricks<\/strong> were salvaged from the ruins of <strong data-start=\"640\" data-end=\"668\">Muurola&#8217;s old sanatorium<\/strong>, which had been <strong data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"726\">destroyed by retreating German troops<\/strong>. Workers painstakingly <strong data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"791\">straightened nails and cleaned bricks<\/strong> to reuse them. At its peak, <strong data-start=\"820\" data-end=\"841\">over 300 builders<\/strong> worked on-site simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"876\" data-end=\"1271\">According to an <strong data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"951\">original typewritten report from Alko Restaurants Ltd.,<\/strong> price regulations in the hospitality industry were lifted on <strong data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1030\">March 1, 1949<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1036\" data-end=\"1101\">Hotel-Restaurant Merihovi officially opened on April 27, 1949<\/strong>. However, it may have been a bit premature\u2014<strong data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1174\">fresh paint was still wet<\/strong>, attracting the season\u2019s first gnats, and <strong data-start=\"1217\" data-end=\"1250\">the walls had to be repainted<\/strong> shortly afterward.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"1273\" data-end=\"1321\"><strong data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1319\">A Grand Hotel Despite Wartime Scarcity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"1323\" data-end=\"1624\">Despite post-war material shortages, Merihovi was an <strong data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1402\">impressive achievement<\/strong>. The elegant <strong data-start=\"1416\" data-end=\"1453\">Paavo Tynell-designed chandeliers<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1480\">classic white pillars<\/strong>, and a <strong data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1533\">large open fireplace in the Uitto Cabinet<\/strong> created a refined atmosphere. Locals and visitors alike <strong data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1621\">fell in love with the hotel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"1626\" data-end=\"1948\">On <strong data-start=\"1629\" data-end=\"1645\">May 24, 1950<\/strong>, columnist <strong data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1670\">Arijoutsi<\/strong> wrote in <em data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1699\">Helsingin Sanomat<\/em>:<br data-start=\"1700\" data-end=\"1703\" \/><em data-start=\"1703\" data-end=\"1946\">&#8220;The face of Kemi has changed tremendously in two years. From a traveler&#8217;s perspective, the most delightful discovery is the city\u2019s new Hotel Merihovi, which, in appearance, facilities, and management, ranks among the finest in the country.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"2071\">The hotel&#8217;s first <strong data-start=\"1968\" data-end=\"1981\">guestbook<\/strong>, now kept at the <strong data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"2025\">Kemi Historical Museum<\/strong>, documents <strong data-start=\"2037\" data-end=\"2068\">notable visitors and events<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"2073\" data-end=\"2115\"><strong data-start=\"2077\" data-end=\"2113\">Famous Visitors &amp; Iconic Moments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"2117\" data-end=\"2578\">\n<li data-start=\"2117\" data-end=\"2259\"><strong data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2146\">President Urho Kekkonen<\/strong> first stayed at <strong data-start=\"2163\" data-end=\"2183\">Merihovi in 1959<\/strong>, and it became a regular stop on his <strong data-start=\"2221\" data-end=\"2256\">annual fishing trips in Lapland<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2324\"><strong data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2288\">Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin<\/strong> drew massive crowds to the hotel.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2325\" data-end=\"2404\"><strong data-start=\"2327\" data-end=\"2370\">Kemi\u2019s first-ever television broadcasts<\/strong> were transmitted from Merihovi.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2405\" data-end=\"2505\"><strong data-start=\"2407\" data-end=\"2476\">Afternoon dances, fashion shows, and festive Martin Goose Dinners<\/strong> became beloved traditions.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2506\" data-end=\"2578\"><strong data-start=\"2508\" data-end=\"2535\">Monday afternoon dances<\/strong> were a particular favorite among guests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"2580\" data-end=\"2631\">From the start, <strong data-start=\"2596\" data-end=\"2628\">Merihovi had two restaurants<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2980\">\n<li data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2692\"><strong data-start=\"2635\" data-end=\"2669\">A first-class hotel restaurant<\/strong> on the second floor.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2693\" data-end=\"2980\"><strong data-start=\"2696\" data-end=\"2728\">A lively street-level tavern<\/strong>, later named <strong data-start=\"2742\" data-end=\"2753\">Ankkuri<\/strong> (The Anchor) at the request of locals, ensuring that <strong data-start=\"2807\" data-end=\"2860\">the sea would always be visible and heard in Kemi<\/strong>. Over time, <strong data-start=\"2873\" data-end=\"2911\">Ankkuri became a famous artist bar<\/strong>, where both <strong data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"2977\">high society and common folk mingled effortlessly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"2982\" data-end=\"3043\"><strong data-start=\"2986\" data-end=\"3041\">A New Chapter \u2013 The Closing and Rebirth of Merihovi<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"3045\" data-end=\"3305\">As time passed, economic downturns took their toll. <strong data-start=\"3097\" data-end=\"3124\">Merihovi closed in 1997<\/strong>. However, by a <strong data-start=\"3140\" data-end=\"3167\">stroke of luck and fate<\/strong>, the hotel&#8217;s <strong data-start=\"3181\" data-end=\"3227\">original silverware and Paavo Tynell lamps<\/strong> ended up in <strong data-start=\"3240\" data-end=\"3272\">P\u00e4ivikki Palosaari\u2019s storage<\/strong>, the future owner of Merihovi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"3307\" data-end=\"3432\">It\u2019s rare for an <strong data-start=\"3324\" data-end=\"3395\">entire hotel to be revived around cutlery, chandeliers, and history<\/strong>, but that\u2019s exactly what happened.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"3434\" data-end=\"3944\">After an extensive <strong data-start=\"3453\" data-end=\"3467\">renovation<\/strong>, Merihovi celebrated its <strong data-start=\"3493\" data-end=\"3532\">grand reopening on October 30, 1999<\/strong>, coinciding with its <strong data-start=\"3554\" data-end=\"3574\">50th anniversary<\/strong>. Nearly <strong data-start=\"3583\" data-end=\"3609\">everything was renewed<\/strong>, but the <strong data-start=\"3619\" data-end=\"3661\">historic charm was carefully preserved<\/strong>. The <strong data-start=\"3667\" data-end=\"3750\">original lighting fixtures, polished silverware, and restored restaurant spaces<\/strong> stood as a testament to Merihovi\u2019s legacy. With <strong data-start=\"3799\" data-end=\"3829\">69 freshly renovated rooms<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3831\" data-end=\"3875\">the fine dining restaurant back in place<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"3881\" data-end=\"3920\">Ankkuri welcoming guests once again<\/strong>, Merihovi was reborn.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"3946\" data-end=\"3970\"><strong data-start=\"3950\" data-end=\"3968\">Merihovi Today<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"3972\" data-end=\"4799\">\n<li data-start=\"3972\" data-end=\"4100\"><strong data-start=\"3974\" data-end=\"4045\">In 2007, all rooms and the second-floor restaurant were refurbished<\/strong>, featuring <strong data-start=\"4057\" data-end=\"4097\">new textiles and refreshed interiors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4101\" data-end=\"4249\">In <strong data-start=\"4106\" data-end=\"4159\">January 2008, the renewed Caf\u00e9-Bar Ankkuri opened<\/strong>, offering <strong data-start=\"4170\" data-end=\"4234\">live music, a cozy atmosphere for adults, and delicious food<\/strong> on weekends.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4250\" data-end=\"4406\">Today, <strong data-start=\"4259\" data-end=\"4304\">Hotel Merihovi provides comfortable stays<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"4310\" data-end=\"4344\">authentic culinary experiences<\/strong>, blending <strong
